Every year in October, thousands of senior athletes and volunteers converge on the desert southwest city of St. George, Utah in search of gold. The Huntsman World Senior Games began in 1987. This event attracts seniors from every state in the nation and all over the globe. The games bring millions of dollars to the local economy during the two week event.
The games not only foster friendly competition for the athletes who are competing, but they also foster good health and physical fitness among the senior population. These events have shown millions of people that just because we grow older, we don’t have to stop doing what we love and what we are passionate about.
These great games are not just about sports or gold medals either. There are plenty of gatherings where participants get a chance to mingle over meals and share life stories. New friendships are formed and old ones renewed. These are activities that will be carried on for the rest of their lives. Not all seniors need to participate in the games to benefit from regular exercise and social interaction. These activities are crucial in maintaining optimal health late into life.
The goal of these games is to promote a healthy lifestyle and give seniors the opportunity to meet and play with those who share their passion. The motto of the games is to promote health, friendship and wellness. The Huntsman World Senior Games are the worlds largest annual multi-sports event for athletes 50 and older. The oldest competitor was the late Russell Clark, who was 105 when he competed in track and field.
This event has become so popular that some of the registrations fill up in minutes. Take Pickleball for example. It took a mere 7 minutes to fill all spots this year. Pickleball is a cross between tennis, table tennis and whiffle ball. It has become extremely popular with people of all ages. Some of the other sports include:
- Power walk
- Square Dancing
